The tiny town of Walhalla is gearing up for its annual Vinter Ljusfest or winter light festival.

This year’s theme is Neil Diamond’s Hot August Nights and features hundreds of lights and a number of video projectors that transform the town.

“There are no streetlights here and it’s very dark, so we light up the buildings, the street and trees” says Michael Leaney, President of Walhalla & Mountain Rivers Tourism.

Picturesque Walhalla has a permanent population of less than 20 yet is aiming to attract thousands of visitors for the month long event.

It is one of a number of attractions offered by the town which also boasts a narrow gauge railway, a gold mine, historic buildings and the start of the 655 km long Great Alpine Walk.
